NIDA and WAA Jointly Release WLAN Green Energy Saving Technical White Paper
The Global Fixed Network Innovation Alliance (NIDA) and the World Wireless LAN Application Development Alliance (WAA) released the WLAN green energy-saving technical white paper at the 2024 BRICS Connectivity Innovation Forum in Xiamen on September 10, 2024. The white paper is prepared by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., China General Technologies (Group), Henan Normal University, Beijing Normal University, BYD Co., Ltd., China First Automobile Group Co., Ltd., Beijing Jingdong Century Trading Co., Ltd., Henan Anran Cloud Network Technology Co., Ltd., Tsinghua University, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, University of Macau, and Macau Branch Co-authored by , HiSilicon Semiconductor Co., Ltd.

Climate warming has become one of the most severe challenges facing the world. As a place with intensive socio-economic activities and energy consumption, green and energy-saving solutions need to be deployed. As an intelligent campus infrastructure, the campus WLAN also needs to be deployed with a green energy-saving solution. Based on actual network requirements, the White Paper analyzes multiple WLAN energy-saving solutions and describes four cases that have been deployed to generate benefits. It is recommended that WLAN network administrators deploy zone-based scheduled shutdown based on service characteristics in different areas of the campus network. (Shut down network services during energy saving periods, saving 29% to 45% of wireless access points (APs) Power consumption) and role-based power-down of partitions (Disable some network services to provide basic network services, reducing the AP energy consumption by 24% to 37%.) Two schemes. In addition, it is recommended that the WLAN awareness capability be coordinated with the intelligent building energy consumption system to save energy for subsystems such as the building air conditioner and lighting, achieving a comprehensive energy saving benefit of about 10% of the building.
At the conference, Mr. Zhang Tao, Director of the Public Platform Business Department of China General Technology (Group) Digital Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., explained in detail the practice of WLAN energy saving in General Technology Group. The speech aroused the audience's great interest and thinking in energy-saving smart buildings. The WAA has issued an initiative to the industry. It proposes that park owners deploy WLAN green energy-saving solutions based on the characteristics of building services, and carry out energy-saving innovation activities of "one area, one policy", promoting the green transformation of the whole society and contributing to the fight against climate change.
